Frans du Mée

About Frans du Mée

Franciscus Elisa (Frans) du Mee was a Dutch actor, singer, songwriter, and cabaret performer, born in Amsterdam on 11 February 1910 and died in Boxmeer on 27 March 1968. At the start of the Second World War he belonged to the company of Lou Bandy, and when Bandy was banned from performing in 1942 for mocking Seyss-Inquart, du Mee carried on with his own troupe, Gezelschap du Mee.

He married his cousin, the athlete Bep du Mee, who performed alongside him after the war under the stage name Ellen Castell. He appeared at the Amsterdam theatre Carre, and the singer Mieke Telkamp once opened for him. Two of his songs, Vakantie in Tirol and Daar waar die molens staan, both scored by Guus Jansen, are still played by barrel organs today, while his lesser known number Rhenen een schatje van een stadje, set to music by Wim Poppink, remained popular locally.

Around 1960 he also wrote a column called De Nieuwste for the magazine Panorama, and in 1962 he performed for Dutch troops in New Guinea alongside several other artists.
