About Samba Schutte

Samba Schutte was born in Nouakchott, grew up in Ethiopia and came to the Netherlands to study at the Hogeschool voor de Kunsten in Utrecht. That move is also where his stand-up began, in English at first, and he later became part of the collective Comedy Explosion.

Dutch cabaret audiences noticed him in 2006. At the Leids Cabaret Festival his programme Kun Min Woni An, a title meaning this is who I am, with scenes built around a djembe, won both the jury prize and the audience prize, although he was still a newcomer. His first full-length show, Hakili Jambar, premiered in 2009, and he wrote for and presented on the Dutch adaptation of The Daily Show.

His screen career then shifted to American productions. After a part in the comedy The Tiger Hunter he played Hakim in the NBC sitcom Sunnyside and the ship's cook Roach in Our Flag Means Death on HBO Max, and in Pluribus on Apple TV he took the role of Koumba Diabatรฉ.
