Tol Hansse
About Tol Hansse
Tol Hansse was born Johannes Adrianus "Hans" van Tol on 3 April 1940 in Laren and died on 29 April 2002. He was a Dutch singer and musician, the son of cabaret performer Jacques van Tol, and adopted a stage name because of his father's history of wartime collaboration.
Hansse played trumpet backing Tom Manders and was a member of the rock band The Sharks with Clous van Mechelen. He had a modestly successful career as a singer-songwriter in the 1970s; Van Mechelen wrote the music for his biggest hit, "Big City" (1978), still regarded as a classic song about Amsterdam, a success he never matched again. He died of lung cancer in Heerhugowaard in 2002.
