About Wieteke van Dort
Louisa Johanna Theodora van Dort, called Wieteke, was born in Surabaya on 16 May 1943 and died on 15 July 2024. She worked as an actress, comedian, singer, writer and artist, and Queen Beatrix made her a Knight of the Order of Orange-Nassau on 29 April 1999.
Van Dort appeared in a long run of children's television programmes, but the part that defined her was Tante Lien, the Indo character she played in The Late Late Lien Show in Dutch prime time. It was the only television programme to put Indo (Eurasian) culture on screen, and it brought many Indo performers and their music to a mainstream audience in the Netherlands.
The series closed after three seasons in 1988. The character outlived it: in 2007 the Dutch State Secretary for Defence awarded her the Silver Medal of Merit for her work as Tante Lien.
