Stand-up comedians from Sweden

Swedish stand-up has a date of birth that people can point to. Stand Up Comedy Klubben was founded in 1988 and started playing at Norra Brunn in Stockholm the year after, and the series Släng dig i brunnen was recorded in that same room on Surbrunnsgatan from 1990 to 1997. The country met the form on television and in a restaurant at roughly the same moment, and that room is still the oldest one in Sweden running stand-up.
The screen never stopped deciding who gets big here. Robert Gustafsson made his name with impressions, character comedy and slapstick, in the sketch group Killinggänget and on the panel show Parlamentet, and the traffic between a sketch studio, a panel show and a club stage still runs both ways. Johan Glans works the observational end, everyday life and male-female relationships turned against himself, while Magnus Betnér takes the provocative one, dark humor and social commentary about religion, politics and sex.
Most of this happens in Swedish, and the home market is small enough that a touring comedian can cover the whole country and then come back to the same towns. Magnus Betnér is one of the few who also works in English, with a full run of hour-long shows at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe behind him.
The newest names came in through a different door. Keyyo built an audience on YouTube before moving to television and radio, and William Spetz was posting comedy videos at fifteen. Stockholm holds most of the club stages, with Gothenburg and Malmö behind it, and the people standing on them come from Lund, Katrineholm, Eslöv, Täby and Hässelby as much as from the capital.
