Bo Burnham
About Bo Burnham
Robert Pickering Burnham (born August 21, 1990), known as Bo Burnham, is an American comedian, actor, musician and filmmaker. His work combines elements of filmmaking with music, sketch and stand-up comedy, often carrying a dramatic, satirical or tragic twist left open to interpretation. Born in Hamilton, Massachusetts, he attended St. John's Preparatory School and graduated in 2008.
In 2006, Burnham created a YouTube channel where he uploaded comedic songs he wrote, often featuring wordplay and taboo or dark subject matter. The videos quickly went viral, making him one of the earliest YouTube stars, and he released albums such as Bo fo Sho (2008) and the self-titled Bo Burnham (2009). He then shifted toward stand-up, releasing the specials Words Words Words (2010), what. (2013) and Make Happy (2016). He created and starred in the 2013 MTV mockumentary series Zach Stone Is Gonna Be Famous and published the poetry book Egghead (2013).
In 2016, Burnham stepped away from performing live due to anxiety and panic attacks on stage. He made his filmmaking debut as writer and director of the drama Eighth Grade (2018), co-starred in Promising Young Woman (2020), and returned to performing with his fourth special, Inside (2021), created alone at home during the COVID-19 pandemic. Released by Netflix to widespread acclaim, Inside won a Peabody Award and three Emmys, and earned a Grammy for Best Song Written for Visual Media for "All Eyes on Me."
