Bargatze was born in Nashville, Tennessee, to Carol and Stephen Bargatze. His father was a clown, member of the International Brotherhood of Magicians, and motivational speaker, and practiced magic tricks with him while growing up. Raised in a devoutly religious Christian household, Bargatze attended Donelson Christian Academy, graduating in 1997, then attended Volunteer State Community College and later Western Kentucky University, which he dropped out of. He worked various jobs, including as a meter-reader for a water company in Mount Juliet, Tennessee, and was inspired to become a comedian by The Bob & Tom Show radio program.
Bargatze began his comedy career in 2002 and moved to Chicago to attend The Second City, before enrolling in Jim Rauth's Comedy College and performing at Zanies Comedy Club. In 2004 he moved to New York City, working as a barker for the Boston Comedy Club in exchange for stage time. He had a turning-point year in 2008, featuring on Comedy Central's Live at Gotham, Late Night with Conan O'Brien, and the Just for Laughs festival in Montreal, and toured extensively with the USO. He won both New York's Comedy Festival and the Boston Comedy Festival in 2010, released his first 30-minute special in 2011, and put out his first comedy album, Yelled At By A Clown, in 2012, which reached No. 2 on the Billboard Top Ten Comedy Charts.
