Australians kept a word for the comic they warm to. A larrikin was a rowdy young tough in the Melbourne streets of the late 1860s, an insult carried over from English dialect, and it turned into a compliment for a person who refuses to stand on ceremony. Plenty of the work here still fits it, from Carl Barron's deadpan material about everyday life to the provocative online rants of Isaac Butterfield. Everyone on this page performs in English, so the code-switching that shapes comedy in other countries is absent, and what separates these acts is temperament and where they came from.
A festival calendar does the job a nightly club circuit does elsewhere. Adelaide Fringe takes mid-February to mid-March with nobody curating it, since any performer can register, and the Melbourne International Comedy Festival holds three and a half weeks of autumn as the largest ticketed cultural event in the country. The open mic ladder belongs to that festival too: Raw Comedy, started in 1996, runs heats around the country, then state finals, then a national final at Melbourne Town Hall. Its prize points offshore, at a place in So You Think You're Funny at the Edinburgh Festival Fringe.
The older names on this page took that road out. Tim Minchin moved from Perth to Melbourne, won the Melbourne festival's first Directors' Award in 2005 with a show called Darkside, and picked up the Perrier Best Newcomer award at Edinburgh in the same year for piano songs and political satire. Jim Jefferies started in Sydney, worked Britain for years, then settled in the United States and became a citizen there in 2018. Both kept touring back.
The other route skips the festival entirely. Luke Kidgell turned viral crowd work clips into tours of Europe, Canada and the United States, and Nat Bartolo, who performs as Nat's What I Reckon, lost a tour to the 2020 lockdowns and rebuilt an audience with cooking videos that abuse jar sauce and tell viewers to use fresh food instead. Television keeps a third track: Tom Cashman writes and plays the Taskmaster's assistant on the Australian edition of Taskmaster.
Deadly Funny, the Melbourne festival's competition for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander performers, is free to enter and holds its workshops and heats in Brewarrina, Cairns, Thursday Island and Townsville before a final that goes out on NITV. The birthplaces in this catalogue run the same way, past Sydney and Melbourne to Longreach, Mount Isa, Blackwater, Corryong and Smithton.
