About Martin Matte

Martin Matte (born April 14, 1970) is a Canadian stand-up comedian and actor from Laval, Quebec. He created and starred in the television sitcom Les Beaux malaises and has been the spokesperson for the Quebec grocery chain Maxi since 2016. He studied marketing and administration at the Université du Québec à Montréal and comedy at the École nationale de l'humour, before beginning his career as a radio host on CKOI-FM and CKMF-FM.

While working as a radio host, Matte began performing stand-up, winning the award for Revelation of the Year at the Gala Les Olivier in 1999. He launched his first solo show, Histoires vraies, in 2000, following up with Condamné à l'excellence (2007) and Eh la la...! (2017), and has won numerous Olivier and Artis awards. Netflix recorded a performance from the Eh la la...! tour for the special La vie, la mort...eh la la..!, making Matte the first Quebec comedian to get his own Netflix special. As an actor, his sitcom Les Beaux malaises premiered on TVA in 2014, starring him as a fictionalized version of himself, and earned him two Gémeaux Awards for best actor in a comedy series.

In 1986, Matte's brother Christian suffered a traumatic brain injury in a car accident that permanently impaired his short-term memory. Frustrated by the lack of resources, Matte launched the Fondation Martin-Matte in 2007, which finances adaptive housing and recreational projects for brain injury survivors and, as of 2023, operates eight Maison Martin-Matte facilities across Quebec. In May 2026 he produced and starred in the Netflix original series Vitrerie Joyal, a quasi-biographical account of him and his family.
