Danish stand-up can be dated to one room and one month. Roger Kormind had studied in California and played small bars there, then came home to a country with, by his own description, no tradition of the form and almost nowhere to do it. Torben Din put a small stage into his Copenhagen restaurant in August 1987, Kormind began playing it regularly, and the circuit starts there.
What came next was organised faster than the size of the place would suggest. A national championship has been contested since 1992, the earliest professionals were already teaching workshops, so the way in ran through a course rather than through years of scraping for spots, and a promoter turned the trade into a business with managed acts and booked tours. Comedy Zoo, the first room built for nothing but comedy, became the address in Copenhagen.
Television then took the roster almost whole. Stand-up.dk went out in 1997 and showed the club circuit to the country in one go, and the same names moved on into sitcoms and satire, which is why a Danish comic is often recognised from a screen rather than from the room where the material was built. Anders Matthesen, on stage since 1993, sits at the far end of that: character comedy, absurdism and rap comedy inside one career.
The map is wider than the capital: rooms opened early in Aarhus and Aalborg, and the people here come from Gug, Ikast, Hinnerup and Tønder as much as from Copenhagen or Østerbro. Danish is the working language and English is the second one, with English-language nights in the capital putting visitors in the same audience as everyone else. The range of material is broad for so small a country: dark humor and political satire next to storytelling, improvisation, feminist and fat acceptance work.
