Stanhope was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. His mother Bonnie was a waitress and his father Russ was head of the science department at Stanhope's school. He quit school at fifteen, and among his early comedy influences were Monty Python and National Lampoon. After living in several places, including Los Angeles, Florida, Idaho and Las Vegas, he settled in Bisbee, Arizona. In 2003 and 2004, he co-hosted the fifth and sixth seasons of The Man Show with Joe Rogan, and he hosted his own radio show on SIRIUS Satellite Radio in 2005. He appeared in the film The Aristocrats and established a group of touring comics known as The Unbookables, whose first CD, Morbid Obscenity, was released in 2006.
