Stanhope was born in Worcester, Massachusetts. His mother Bonnie was a waitress and his father Russ was head of the science department at Stanhope's school. He quit school at fifteen, and among his early comedy influences were Monty Python and National Lampoon. After living in several places, including Los Angeles, Florida, Idaho and Las Vegas, he settled in Bisbee, Arizona.
