Wuppertal lies along the narrow valley of the river Wupper in the Bergisches Land, in the German state of North Rhine-Westphalia. The city is best known for its Schwebebahn, a suspended monorail that has run above the river since 1901. It was also the birthplace of Friedrich Engels and grew into an early centre of German industry. Beyond its industrial past, Wuppertal is celebrated for its pioneering dance theatre, and its cultural life today also includes Kabarett and touring stand-up comedy.
