Olinda stands on wooded hills above the coast, next to Recife. It is among Brazil's best preserved colonial towns and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with baroque churches, cobbled lanes and houses painted in strong colours.
Its Carnival is carried through the streets by giant papier-mâché puppets and set to the rhythms of frevo. The comedian João Pimenta was born in Olinda.
