Westernieland is a small village in the northern Dutch province of Groningen, set among flat, open farmland near the Wadden Sea coast. Like many settlements in the area, it grew up around a raised mound, or terp, built as protection against flooding, and it keeps a quiet, rural feel.
Live comedy in such small communities is rare, but as Dutch stand-up tours reach ever wider, nearby town venues bring visiting acts within easy reach. Westernieland is the hometown of comedian Freek de Jonge.
