A comic here picks a language before picking a room. Hebrew is what the audience speaks and it is also the ceiling on how far the act can travel, so the names that go further tend to learn their set twice. Yohay Sponder started in Hebrew clubs, switched into English, ran a weekly English night in Tel Aviv called Funny Monday with Shahar Hason, and later took a solo show through North America and Europe. Most of the comedians listed on this page stay on the Hebrew side, where nothing has to be explained first.
The circuit itself arrived as an import. Shmuel Vilozny saw a street stand-up show in London, came home and founded the Camel Comedy Club in Tel Aviv, and the scene grew out of that room in the mid-1980s. What passed for comedy before it was a different craft: HaGashash HaHiver, a trio active from 1964 to 2007, worked in sketch and wordplay and left behind a whole register of invented phrases, Gashashit, that Hebrew speakers still use without thinking about where it came from. Stand-up landed in front of an audience already tuned to listen for the language itself.
Jerusalem and Tel Aviv do not run the same kind of night. Off the Wall Comedy Basement, opened on Ben Yehuda Street by David Kilimnick and Jeremy Saltan, keeps weekly shows in both English and Hebrew and puts clean family entertainment in its mission statement, which suits material about religious life and about arriving in the country as an immigrant. The Tel Aviv rooms are less careful about that: Comedy Bar and Zoa Comedy Bar, where Dudu Erez plays, work in Hebrew first, while Stand Up Factory in the south of the city gives the English acts a bill of their own.
The names at the top of this page belong mostly to that Hebrew circuit: Ori Hizkiah, Uri Broyer, Meni Ozeri, Asaf Mor Yosef, Matan Peretz, Hen Mizrahi. The subjects repeat across them, and they are the ones the country hands over cheaply: family, religious observance, Jewish identity, and the distance between people born here and people who came by aliyah, handled as observational stand-up more often than as character work.
